I have seen a great many people complaining about their electrical bill doubling or worse as a result of running their reef tank. It turns out that some smart equipment choices and a little bit of DIY can result in a reef that consumes less than 2.0 watts per gallon. For the truly spartan, it is possible to get closer to 1.0 watt per gallon. Not too bad considering some people in the hobby will recommend 10 watts per gallon of lighting (which is nonsense by the way)!
